I test drove and bought (pending inspection) a great little 1987 325is as winter project and then put my grandfather's ridiculously low mileage perfect condition 1989 W124 300CE for sale on CL. Some tiny voice in the back of my head is telling me that what's being sold is just as collectible as what's being bought...
But I'll stick with my decisions for now.

I knooooowwww... it's tough. I love the Coupe's pillarless side profile, I love the ride, I love the switchgear, and I love looking at that star and imagining looking through a sniper rifle.
But the 325is Coupe has so much potential. And it's a quarter of the price! And it's got a stick!

Okay, I didn't realize there was that much of a price difference.

I'd rather have the W124. That's just me...

If the US market's mirroring the UK one, you picked a great time to buy the BMW, but a poor one to sell the Merc. If it's an option to hold onto it for a few years, I doubt you'll regret the decision financially.
Oh, and I'm another who thinks you'd be mad to sell it at all if you don't have to. Unless you get a very good price for it, at least. Buying a classic is to some extent a gamble, and you hope and pray to get exactly what you already have: a genuine low mileage minter.

What exactly do you know about future W124 prices? EU vs. NA? I'm curious, as I know way too little about Mercs.

I know nothing, I would stress. But I have an opinion :)
Looks to me like they're just past bottoming out, on the part of the curve where the prices start accelerating upwards again. If they're not quite there yet, they can't be too far away.
My info's more UK-specific, and of course stuff like different regulations and insurance costs mean the markets don't track exactly, but either way the newest W124s are getting on for twenty years old.

Cool, thanks for the information Dave. I've noticed that the W124 market ranges from 2k to 11k. That's from crummy high mileage to mid mileage convertible coupes. I figure I'd list my family's for 7k.
That's 80,000ish clicks, perfect mechanical and near perfect cosmetic condition serviced by Mercedes specialists all of it's life. Thoughts?

$2k-11k sounds about right for prices that have bounced off the bottom, but not really got going yet. I'm assuming that there are some really poor barely-running examples below $2k as well?
Going by those prices, $8k sounds like the right ballpark - but it also sounds to me like a price that isn't worth selling the car for, unless you really need or want to. A mint condition Merc coupe for $8k is a bargain, whatever the rest of the market says right now.
For what it's worth, the nicest 300CEs I can see for sale in the UK right now are going for £8-15k, and most don't appear to be any/much better than you're describing yours to be.
